Freight Hooks hanging from the buildings.

A Freight Hook, or Sky Crane, is a means of navigation within the floating city of Columbia. Presumably, they are fastening points for cargo to be hoisted from below. As with the Sky-Lines, Booker DeWitt can use the Sky-Hook to latch onto them and leap to a distant point.

Freight Hooks can be found throughout the city or summoned through Tears. An unknown mechanism (possibly magnetic) in the Sky-Hook allows people to bridge the distances between themselves and the Freight Hooks.

Burial at Sea - Episode 1[]

The Burial at Sea version of the freight hook.

Naturally, an underwater metropolis like Rapture has no use for the kind of Freight Hooks encountered in a flying city like Columbia. Instead, the downloadable content Burial at Sea features ornamental lighting sconces that serve the same function. The sconces take the form of an Art Deco figure raising up a thick chain enveloped around a lit globe. Booker and Elizabeth can reach these wall fixtures using the Air Grabber.

Burial at Sea - Episode 2[]

The sconces return in this episode as well. Elizabeth can use them to avoid enemies or to get to higher ground. If she hangs too long on any one of them, the Air Grabber will become jammed and make a sound, drawing attention to her.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • In the Raven's Dome arena in Clash in the Clouds, there are freight hooks suspended by balloons.
  • Despite the fact that the Rapture equivalent is clearly not a freight hook, the ornamental lighting sconces are still listed as "freight hooks" in the game text.
  • Strangely, When Elizabeth returns to Columbia in Burial at Sea - Episode 2, instead of the normal freight hooks encountered in the main game, Columbia now features the Art Deco sconces from Rapture. This may have been done due to time constraints or might just be a simple oversight.
