Elaine McDonagh met Bill McDonagh while she was working for Andrew Ryan as a secretary. After their first year in Rapture, Bill and Elaine married and had their only child, Sophie, in 1949. In 1959, following her husband's death at the hands of Ryan's forces, she escaped the city with her daughter and settles in an unknown city, presumably New York, as this is where her husband and most probably herself lived before migrating to Rapture. Here, Elaine hires a therapist, who diagnoses her daughter Sophie with agoraphobia.
