Edith Crenshaw is a citizen of Rapture. She was a struggling mother who was rather overprotective of her son Franklin. She feared he would get himself killed if she let down her guard for but a split second. She consulted a doctor, who prescribed a Plasmid.[1]

Some of the female Splicers trapped in Fontaine's mention her son Franklin, indicating that her ADAM usage, or an allegiance to Frank Fontaine, resulted in her becoming one of the many prisoners locked up in the department store.
